I drive a 93 Jeep Wrangler 4WD. I notice the other day that my rear tires were skidding a bit on the wet pavement. Turns out both rear tires are worn on the outside edge of the tread. If you think of the surface of the tire as having four segments, it would be the outside 1/4th of both rear tires that is worn. I’m just a wannabe car guy, but from what I gather from the net it is probably in need of new shocks. I’ve had the Jeep for 10 years and never put new shocks on it.

I wanted to make sure it couldn’t be an alignment problem. I figure the front tires would be worn if it were an alignment problem, right? The car doesn’t pull very bad to one side or the other while driving, and I did get it aligned about 4 or 5 years ago. There is some “play” in the steering gear, if that’s relevant. It was like that back when I got the alignment, and I never fixed it.

Any help from a real car guy? I can put the shock in myself if that is what is needed; otherwise, I’m taking it in and need some knowledge.
It’s a solid rear axle with leaf springs, shocks, and a track bar. If “cupping” occurs ACROSS the tread, then it definitely is not cupping. So it apparently isn’t the shocks. Someone asked if I had, in the past, rotated the tires so that the wear on the tires presently on the rear of my Jeep would have come from originally being worn down while on the front. I don’t think so. The reason is that the tires presently on the front should, by now, be worn down on the outside. But they aren’t. I don’t get it.

That isn’t typical of worn out shocks. Tire wear with worn out shocks is cupping across the tread. If the Jeep is Independent Rear Suspension ( Swing axle on either side) then the problem you’re describing is very likely an alignment problem of the rear wheels. If you have a solid axle there is no rear wheel alignment required.

Check the tire pressure and make sure that it is up to full pressure because when it is low the outer walls on the tire sink cause the the outside of the tread to wear faster because of more of the cars weight is on it

Welcome to Wrangler ownership. Wranglers are notorious for uneven tire wear. I think that is why they put Goodyear Wrangler ST tires on them at the factory now because the solid shoulder block is less prone to this sort of wear.

All you can do is align it ONCE A YEAR (not every 5) and rotate tires regularly. New shocks would probably also be a really good idea as they can most definately contribute to uneven tire wear and will be quite beyond their us-by date on a 18 year old car.
