I own an H-D FXDWG. (It’s a motorcycle, but I’m sure you know this.) I pay $ 240.00 a month for the bike. My insurance is $ 267.00 a year, even though I have a DUI on my record. I get about 45 MPG, (I have to use premium gas since the engine is air cooled.) and I ride about 130-150 miles a week. That comes out to about $ 10.00 a week with gas being around $ 2.40 a gallon.

In case you are wondering, no. This is not a weekend plaything, but my regular weekday, back and forth to work, etc., ride. Sometimes the grocery shopping is a pain, but…

Washing costs me squat. I get no water bill. Some of the special stuff I have to use is a bit on the expensive side, since I can’t use what you use on a car. I’d say about $ 150.00 a year to cover all the washing duties, including the rags, and q-tips. I usually clean my washable air filter during this time. After three cleanings, I replace my air filter. It runs about $ 55.00.

Bikes take special oil. Especially the big air cooled ones. I pay about $ 8.00 a quart, and it takes 3 quarts. I need to change my oil more often, like about every 2,000 miles. Plus stuff you don’t have on a car needs to be lubed, tightened, adjusted, etc. A full service on my bike costs about $ 200.00 for everything except the tip for the mechanic. I only have this done about three times a year though. (I don’t wait for the miles to be up. I could probably get away with two times a year.)

All in all, I probably pay about $ 340-360 a month to keep moving. (Gas prices are weird, so I can’t be exact. Plus my math stinks.) I have no depreciation per se, since older H-D’s are in demand all the time. When I traded my last bike I got just $ 700.00 less than I paid for it. Try THAT with a car! This is pretty well much just the good bikes, though. The H-D’s, the BMW’s, the Ducati’s, the big Honda cruisers, etc.
