Spray more de-icer on this hole. With the combination of the de-icer, and the warmth of the defroster, the ice will start melting pretty quick. Eventually the hole in the ice will get larger, and spraying more de-icer, and a little scraping, will make the hole real big.
It’s easier to get ice off of your windshield, when you have a hole through the ice. The de-icer will be able to get under the ice some, by spraying at the outside edges of the hole, and the defroster will take over. Spray the wiper arms also. Tap them with the scraper. DON’T turn them on until you have most of the ice off of them. The hinge part where they rotate from needs to be free also.

After you have removed the ice, go to your local hardware store, and buy some plastic used for covering windows. Get as thick as you can afford. You want the kind they have on a large roll. The store clerk rolls off the width you want. The length is determined by the length of the roll, so just go with that. You don’t want to buy a whole roll of window plastic. (Already made up for house windows) Most of the time this stuff is too thin. Besides, you don’t need the whole roll. (Unless you have a four door car, and want to cover the back ‘windshield’, and the roll of stuff isn’t pre-perforated for house windows)
The width should be around 4 feet. You are going to open the passenger door, and put an amount of it in, then close the car door on it. This keeps it anchored, so you can come across the windshield, and anchor the other end in the drivers door. You may have to adjust it a couple of times, by opening the door/s, and pulling it tighter. You want it as tight on the windshield as you can. Over the windshield on top a few inches, and covering your wiper arms.
