I would need to look at the machine in question, but there are 2 different types of axles that I know of. Full-floating and semi-floating. It is easy to tell the difference by looking at the center of the hub. If you have bolts showing other than the lug nut studs, then you have a full-floating axle. If you do not see such bolts, you have a semi-floating axle.

First I will explain a semi-floating axle. What this means is that some of the weight of the vehicle rests on the axle shaft itself. If this is the type of axle your tractor has, then what most likely happened is that the c-clip in the differential that holds the axle in has fallen off, or broken. In this case you will need to open the differential and replace the c-clip.

With the full-floating axle, as you may have guessed, none of the weight of the vehicle rests on the axle shaft normally. If this is the type of axle you have, what likely happened is that the nut in the hub that holds the hub on the axle housing has backed off. In this case you will need to take the axle shaft out by undoing the bolts that let you know it is a full-floating axle. Sometimes the axle shaft seal can be difficult to break, so don’t fear using a bit of prying force. Once you have that out, you should be able to see the nut that I’m talking about. inspect all of the components you see in there, REPLACE ANYTHING THAT APPEARS SCORED OR DAMAGED, then re-assemble and install the nut according to the manufacturers specifications. A dealer should be able to help you find those specifications.
