You can get your CDL at age 18…. You are not allowed to run interstate…. You have to stay in the state you are licensed in.

Second, you will probably have a very difficult time getting a job because of your age. Like everyone stated, it’s an insurance thing. You are looking at age 21 for interstate and most companies that I have dealt with have a 23 year age minimum for insurance purposes.

There is no law that says you can’t get your CDL and drive a truck, but the odds are against you for that job to happen. If you know a farmer or rancher that needs someone to haul grain, or livestock to the elevator or stockyard, you may get lucky. You might find an owner operator that will put you on running locally, but I highly doubt it. You are going to have a tough time getting your foot in the door, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done….

I have been looking at life through a windshield for over thirty years… with no accidents or violations…. 2.5 million miles… I have also trained more people how to drive one than I can remember. It is not just a job, but a lifestyle. It can be very rewarding, but also can be very lonely. You have to enjoy your own company… :-}

We had a 19 yr old in my driving school. You *can* get your CDL at 18, but you can’t cross state lines. I don’t know for sure if that 19 yr old ever ended up getting a trucking job.

There *might* be some construction jobs, where you’d be driving a mini-wheeler entirely on-site, making dirt piles LOL, that’d hire an 18 yr old with a CDL….but the pay is typically pretty low and you’re usually expected to do other forms of labor when not driving the truck.

I was in your shoes when I was 20- only I didn’t have as long to wait. If you *really* like driving, in the meantime maybe try finding a job as a courier, parts delivery person, floral delivery, etc…some of those places will hire an 18 yr old especially if you’re willing to use your own vehicle (and it’s a little more varied than pizza delivery ….

When you turn 21- go for it. I don’t think it’s worth getting your CDL now, because by the time you’re 21 and some companies will hire you, no one will take you because it’ll be 3 yrs since you got behind the wheel.

There *are* companies who will hire you at 21- Covenant and Swift, and I think Werner and Schneider will too. Look around and don’t give up- I had to find a company that’d hire me at 21 AND let me bring my little dog. I thought I’d have to wait until I was 23 until I did some more digging.

True, your choices will open up GREATLY when you turn 23, and almost every company in the country will hire you if you’re at least 25. I’m 26 now with 5 yrs safe driving experience, it’s a good feeling to be able to qualify for better jobs with higher pay, I’ve been able to haul cars, now I’m driving a rather nice, un-governed Volvo for a small company….the pay is excellent, I’m respected, my boss knows my name, and I’m earning more yearly than most of my friends who went to college (not that that matters, LOL….but it’s kind of nice especially when some people turned their nose up at my idea to quit college and go to trucking school). Your choices are a bit limited at 21…but then again, at ANY AGE you’ve got a lot of limits if you’re “brand new” out of driving school….you’re still limited to the Schneiders and Werners and other big companies.
