Why did my car over-steer?

Last night I was taking the first exit off a round about, as I turned left down the exit, the back of the car stepped out to the right, fortunately I was able to maintain control of the car but I am a bit worried why it happened. (Please read my thoughts below before posting an obvious answer..!)

Obviously the speed I was travelling had an effect, as did the fact that it was raining and wet. (I did try the same junction a few minutes later at a much lower speed to see if there was oil on road and nothing untoward happened). However when the skid occurred I do not believe I was travelling at an excessive speed for the conditions.

Likewise I was driving a sub-1 litre front wheel drive Corsa, so not exactly a high powered rear drive sports car. Normally this car is very grippy, I have on occasions managed to get the car to under-steer under very heavy cornering, but in 11 years of driving I’ve never known something like this to happen in a car like this.

I also wondered whether the rear aqua planed, but I would have thought that if there was enough water to cause the back to aqua-plain and over-steer then the front would have under-steered first, which it did not.

Other thoughts I’ve had is that the car needed some new tyres earlier in the year. At the moment both front and right rear tyres are new, and the left rear is a few years old. As far as I know there are all correctly inflated, but I will check this later today.

Any suggestions of what might have happened, or if there might be something wrong with car are appreciated.

“I do not believe I was traveling at an excessive speed for the conditions”. If the car had good tires then obviously you were traveling too fast. What probably happened is that you hit a bump or even just an undulation in the road which made the car get “light” on the wheels which caused it to lose traction. Once a car enters a skid it can be very difficult to regain steering control.

    The obvious answer is that you were going excessively fast for the conditions. Whether you believe this to be the case or not, the behaviour of your car would strongly suggest that your judgement is not correct.

    Aqua-planing depends on how well each tyre can clear the water on the road surface and “bite down” onto the tarmac underneath. If the tyre is worn or incorrectly inflated and is unable to clear the water, it starts to “float” and all grip is lost at that corner. This could have been exacerbated by any heavy braking or sudden steering inputs that would throw the weight forward.

    Do the obvious things first. Check the tyres are correctly inflated and that there a good amount of tread depth right across the tread.
