In rain, there is less traction, so the wheels can slip to compensate for this built up force, but it’s should still not be there, and can still cause wear, and eventual failure. All wheel drive (AWD) cars and SUVs use limited slip couplings that allow for the wheels to move relative to each other, so there is no force build up. Locking differential type 4WDs, on most trucks and jeeps style vehicles, can easily slip thier wheels in the limited traction of dirt roads, and locking action is better then the slight slippage you get with a limited slip diff, when your off road, for traction. Ok, you can use 4wd on pavement. I don’t know who told you you can’t but they are wrong. Unless your vehicle is equipped with a locking differential in the front your drivetrain will be fine. Now if you drive everyday all day for the life of your vehicle in 4wd you may cause premature wear on your front differential but not your transfer case. Also you will notice the wheels are difficult to turn while 4wd is engaged which is because they are recieving power from the transfer case which restricts there turning capabilities. Unless you really have a need for 4wd leave it in 2wd. On wet pavement there is nothing wrong with having it in 4wd and you will get a lot better traction when accelerating but only on hard throttle.
