    Any time you let off the throttle in a gas powered vehicle in any gear while still in gear you are technically “engine braking”, even if you don’t downshift.

    If you want to slow more quickly using engine braking downshift to a lower gear, match revs and let the clutch out. If you want to slow even more while downshifitng, don’t match revs before releasing the clutch when downshifting- in that case you’re essentially using the clutch like a brake until the revs match, but by doing so you’re also wearing out the clutch faster too.

    The only real guideline to engine braking and downshifting to acheive more engine braking is that you obviously don’t want to downshift to a gear that’s too low causing the engine to exceed its redline RPM and ruin the engine.

    3. Downshift (still holding clutch)
    4. Ease on both brakes WHILE
    5. Slowly releasing the clutch

    The vibrations are probably because you are downshifting while the engine is still revving too fast. This is why I ease on my brakes while releasing the clutch.
