We just inherited a small trucking comapany with three trucks. They were used in the oild field and the trailers were sold recently. We are looking at replacing the trailers but don’t know what is best to haul. What pays the best and what is in demand?

Not too long ago, I would have said cars. But with the decline in the economy, new car freight has dropped off considerably and the market is saturated with people looking for used/specialty cars to haul. You can check around, but I am not sure what cars are paying these days. Investing in 3 car trailers right off the bat would be costly & could be more than you bargained for if you don’t know the industry.

It’s not the best-paying freight, but getting 3 refrigerated trailers would give you versatility (can haul dry freight, plants, produce, meat & other perishable foodstuff)…..plus, no matter how bad the economy gets, there will ALWAYS be a need for people to haul food. Anyone with simple knowledge of diesel motor mechanics can work on reefer motors…they don’t come with complicated hydraulic systems & a need to install a wet system on the tractor. Overall, not a difficult place to start.

If you live near wheat, corn, or livestock country, you could see about hauling grain hoppers or livestock trailers. Right now, grain pays very well. But the only problem with those industries is that the price of your “freight” follows the market….Corn prices and cattle futures fall, so do your profits…..and the speculation I’ve heard doesn’t bode well for the future of grain & food prices.

Another suggestion is leasing your tractors on with an owner/op company like Landstar or R&R Trucking out of Joplin, MO. They provide the trailers, freight, cargo insurance, etc….you provide the drivers & the tractors. If you can find GOOD teams (safe, reliable, with a good work history) you can get them on as dedicated A, A& E (arms, ammo & explosives) haulers. Drivers will need to pass a 10 year FBI background check & in the case of Landstar, need to work for 6 months hauling regular freight before they are eligible. (R&R will hire AA&E drivers outright as long as they pass clearance).

Last summer when fuel hit $ 5.30 a gallon in some places, the AA&E drivers were the only ones who weren’t REALLY feeling the burn. That freight pays upwards of $ 3-4.00 a mile in some cases. (Refrigerated freight is lucky to pay $ 1.85 per mile- less right now due to lower fuel surcharges). And since the company owns the trailer, you’re not responsible for the costly cargo insurance for those high-dollar military loads & explosives :) .

Going that route would save you the cost of buying the trailers, would save the hassle of finding freight, learning the industry, building relationships with brokers, etc. If you don’t know the industry, you’re likely to hit a few bumps in the road & lose several drivers before you get things ironed out. Leasing on with another company leaves it to the “pros” to find the freight, issue pay, plan runs, etc…..meanwhile, you can learn the “game” as you go along.
