Trucks!? Which one is the best/safest/most affordable/most reliable?
Right now I have a Subaru Outback, love it but I want/need a truck (horses). So a hauling truck, also needs to be 4wd. 1500/150? 2500/250? 3500/350? Best gas mileage? Fuel efficiency will have an impact on my decision.
I’ve heard good and bad things about all trucks, and done a lot of research but can’t decide. Right now I’m leaning toward Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. But what years? And would a Ford, Dodge, or Toyota be better? And if so what years of those trucks? So many questions, so many options!!
Please no answers of “Ford’s rule!” or “Chevy’s are the best” or “I’d rather be cummin’ than strokin’” I’ve heard all of that, I need reasons, facts, solid and concrete! Thanks 
P.S. Thoughts on Diesels?
I don’t think I’m going to have much need for heavy hauling, so probly not 3500/350. But I’m going to need more power than a Tacoma, as great as they are I’m going to be hauling anywhere from a 2 horse trailer with one horse to a 5 horse trailer with 5 horses, so I don’t think that will cut it. 
I’m really considering a diesel. I’ve heard that diesel is better for the environment than gas, but I’ve also heard its worse. ???
I’ve also heard about installing a Micro-chip to enhance power and fuel efficiency. ???
I guess a 5 horse trailer with 5 horses would be considered a heavy load, but would that need a 3500/350?

Diesels get bad rep. They’re actually just as fuel efficient at gasoline engines, but ultimately comes down to the driver.
If you’re doing some heavy heavy towing, look to the 3500/350 model of a truck, you’ll need the beefy rear end.
As far as gas motors are concerned, Dodge’s Hemi kindof blows the other trucks out of the water for power.
As far as Diesel motors, Duramax and Cummins (Chevy and Dodge) both have great power houses.
It’s really about personal preference, but definitely go with the larger size of truck.

First off, if you’re going to be hauling heavy loads, definitely go with a diesel engine. They have a load more torque, and lower in the rev range than a petrol engine. They’re not only designed for better fuel economy but also for lots of pulling power.
As for brands, everybody’s got their own opinion on car manufacturers and their good and bad trucks/cars. Really it’s a personal preference thing, although obviously choosing a brand with the lower repair costs and most powerful/torquey diesel engines is key.

I would get a diesel. They give more torque, which is whats important with towing, and are also more fuel efficient. The most sensible truck to buy would be a Silverado/Sierra. They are Consumer Reports “Top Pick”, which means they are reliable, capable, well built, and drive nicely. They are the most well-rounded trucks. However, the Ford F-350 is the most capable, but 99.9% of consumers will never need the slight advantage it possesses over the Chevy and Dodge. The Ford F-250/350 is on Forbes.com list of “The Worst Made Cars In America”, which analyzes reliability and quiality data from Consumer Reports and JD Power. After living with one for several years I can see why. the quality is pretty poor, on the dash there’s sharp edges, big panel gaps, and things are just put together poorly. It’s also been the most unreliable car I’ve personally experienced, within 5 years needing several thousand dollars worth of work on the drivetrain (thankfully covered by warranty), but the truck still rattles like crazy on the highway. I’m not saying because I’ve had a bad experience with Ford that all Ford’s are bad. I know they aren’t, but it’s turned my dad away from ever buying an American car again. That leaves us with the Dodge. It’s easily the best looking truck, and the interior is by far the most refined. That carries over to the ride, and because it uses coil springs it’s by far the most composed on the highway and feels the least truck like. That does sacrifice payload a nit, but it will still be able to haul a horse trailer and leaf springs are still available for those who really need it.
I would recommend a 2500/250 for your needs. A 3500 is overkill, while a 1500 could cut it but you’re best off with a 2500 so it never feels strained. Consumer Reports says the reliability for the Dodge is “Average”, the Ford F-250 is “Much worse than average” (although the f-150 improves to “Average”), while the Silverado is also rated “Average”. The Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra also score an “Average’. So that eliminates the F-250, and I wouldnt get the Nissan because it’s outdated or the Toyota because the interior is pretty cheap and it’s not as well built as the rest, and neither of those offer a diesel. When somebody tells you bad things about diesels they probably have images in their head of stinky old diesels that put out a cloud of soot every time you hit the gas, but new diesels are actually cleaner than gas engines. So that leaves us with the Dodge and GM twins. Between those I would buy the Dodge. I’ve always liked Dodge trucks, but I truly believe the new one is the class leader. The GM’s are slightly more reliable but the difference is like splitting hairs. Either truck is far more capable than you would need. I would buy the Dodge because its a looker. Its big rig styling nailed exactly what a truck should be. It’s masculine, but much more svelte than the ungainly Ford, and the Silverado and Sierra are a bit restrained. Plus the interior is great too. The work-truck level interior on the GM’s is pretty boring and basic, but the high end one would be at home on a luxury car. Actually it is, as GM’s has used some of the same bits on Buick’s and Cadillac’s. But that is a problem in a truck because, the the small buttons aren’t going to be of any use when wearing work gloves. The Dodge on the other hand has a better base level interior, and the top level Laramie trim has all the wood and metal accents you cold want, but it’s controls are still big, easy to use, and truck-like. Plus the Ram is the Motor Trend Truck of the Year, so they’re doing something right. Either truck will be more than enough to get the job done. I would go test them and see what you like more. Ask the dealer about each trucks towing capabilities. Whenever I see a big horse trailer it’s usually with a 2500/3500 diesel. I don’t know how much those weigh, so I’d talk to your dealer as they should know what their trucks are capable of. I just know a diesel is really going to be to your advantage. They have a lot more torque, and especially lower in the rev range. When youre getting going off the line and passing on the highway you’ll really notice the difference a diesel makes. Plus you save a bit on gas too.
