Gobal warming is caused by the increase in greenhouse gasses, primarily carbon dioxide, compined with deforestation of the plants that convert it into oxygen. These gasses rise into the atmosphere and trap the heat of the sun, much like the glass in a greenhouse holds the heat from the sun.

Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of combustion in most forms. The improvements in auto emissions over the past 40 years has cut the levels of some toxic gasses (carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen) dramatically but has actually increased the proportion of carbon dioxide since combustion is much more complete. All carbon based fuels WILL generate CO2 when burned — wood, alcohols, coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline are all carbon based and contribute to the problem.
