How to lower the engine temperature?
I have a 1990 chevy camaro rs, swapped the tpi 305 for a carbureted 350. I am trying to get my car to run as cool as possible(cooler than the average car) so I can squeeze as much power out of the engine as i can. So far the only thing i can think of to do is put a 160 thermastat on and change out the water pump for a heavy duty water pump. Is there a high performance fan or maybe a dual fan thats made specifically for my car? Does anyone make a high performance radiator for my car? if so would they really help much at all? thanks any input is greatly appreciated!

well a v8 does not really run cool. if the engin runs within specks you should let it be. the engin can malfunction if it runs too cool.
you can try a full synthetic oil and radiator fluid for starters.

One good idea is to add a transmission cooler in front of your radiator. that will lower your radiator temperature about 10 percent. Then again thats if it is an automatic trans. You may also want to think about installing an alluminum oil pan.
I would find a radiator for a big block chevy motor…400, 454… something like that, I would also get a dual electric fan set up from O’Reilly Auto parts. They are generic and are made to fit many applications. There is also a product called Kool Aid for radiators that makes the coolant cool better. Also at O’Reillys.

dont forget to change the coolant temp bulbs they will only give the computer a signal until they have warmed up to the orginal setting of 180 or 190 degree. which will result in a rich fuel mixture until you hit the higher temps. try an after market tranny oil cooler, and an Engine oil cooler. They make a low pressure (I think its either nos or carbon dioxide) system that sprays on the outside of the fins of the cooler to lower the temps of the fluids, and the air supply.
FYI. As engine temp decreases cylinder wear increases. Sounds weird I know, but look in any engine builders book and they will have a chart that shows this. If your motor is running withing speck (around 180-200) your fine. Some times on fuel injected cars they will put a 160 thermostat in to trick the computer into running rich and making more hp. That trick doesn’t work with a carbureted motor. Good luck.
You might try running the engine with no thermostat, that is the cheapest way to cool it down.
as with anything on a car you have to use a systems approach. too large a radiator, and too cold a thermostat, and the engine runs too cold. not enough radiator and the engine runs hot regardless of the fan and thermostat you use. why?
an engines cooling system is designed to run at a certain temperature by the engineers. if the system is designed to run at 200 degrees, and you install a 160 thermostat, all the means is that the thermostat will start to open at 160 degree, but the engine will still run at 200 degrees. a system designed to run at 160 degrees with a 200 degree thermostat will run at 200 degrees or so as that is when the thermostat opens and the radiator can start shedding heat from the engine coolant.
so how do we get an engine to run at the temperature you desire.
1: you need a radiator that will shed a lot of heat. this means either a copper/brass radiator with four rows of tubes(more than this and you start blocking airflow defeating the purpose), or an aluminum radiator with 2 rows of 1″ tubes.
2: we also need 16 to 18 fins per inch of tube for a street radiator as this gives us enough surface area that the cooling fan can draw enough air at idle to allow the radiator to shed more heat than it absorbs from the engine.
3: we need a thermostat to control coolant flow through the engine. slow enough to absorb engine heat, yet fast enough to allow for efficient transfer to the radiator.
4: we need a fan that will pull enough air through the radiator to allow the coolant to give up its heat to the air. at idle or low speeds.
one thing we do not want is for the engine to run too hot or too cold. i like my engines to run around 180-195 degrees.
recommendations;
1: aluminum radiator with 2 rows of 1″ wide tubing
2: a water pump from an air conditioned car. these flow more coolant.
3: ditch the 160 thermostat for a 180 thermosat.
4: use an electric fan from something like a ford taurus. these fans pull a lot air through the radiator. you want a controller that turns the fan on at about 200 degrees, and off at around 180 degrees. you also want the fan on when the a/c is turned on.
oh and do not run without a thermostat. if you do your engine will take a long time to warm up, and will have a tendency to overheat as too much coolant is passing through the radiator.
