The SR-71 IS NOT a Fighter, it is a High speed, High altitude Reconnaissance aircraft.
It was decommissioned, because its operating costs became to high and most of its missions could now be accomplished with satellites.
Edit: The SR-71 DID NOT use JP-4/5 fuel, it used JP-7 completely different with a flash point over 400 degrees.
Being made of Titanium gave the airframe an almost infinite lifespan. Every time it cruised at Mach 3 it got a new heat treatment. Sorry, but the SR-71 was no “fighter jet”. It was an enormous plane that didn’t have much maneuvering capability, despite its speed. The F-22 Raptor didn’t replace the SR-71, it replaced the F-15 Tomcat.
Basically, the Blackbird and its varants were in use for almost 40 years before the Air Force pulled the plug, that’s a really long time. For the most part, the fall of the Soviet Union is what caused it. The SR-71 was a reconaissance plane that was used mainly for espionage. When the Cold War ended, there was really no more use for it. The development of UAV’s(unmanned air vehicles) pretty much makes airplanes like the SR-71 obsolete in the eyes of the US military. They don’t wish to risk human life when it’s unnecessary. Another factor is cost, the Blackbird required a tremendous amount of fuel during each run. Factor in all the maintenance, and you have an annual operating cost in the millions.

The SR-71 was replaced for many reasons. It was a technological nightmare, extremely high maintenance to flight time hours and it required all sorts of special pilot equipment and training. A satellite is cheaper and lasts longer. The information is better.

Uhhh… The Blackbird was never a fighter. It was a high altitude, high speed reconnaissance platform. While an early pro-production prototype (A-12 / YA-12) envisioned an attack role for it, it didn’t prove out to be a reliable munitions delivery platform. (For one thing, it could out-fly its cannon and could literally shoot itself down.)
While it was good at what it did, it’s been surpassed by other forms of intelligence gathering that provides better data at a lower cost. Part of its mission was replaced by satellites, part by UAVs (some of which can stay aloft for days) and some by things that cannot be discussed in public.
The SR-71 was hideously expensive to operate. It used special fuel (jellied so that it would not leak when the airframe and tanks were cold) and used a full load of fuel just to get to its initial cruising altitude where it would hit a tanker and take on a full load of regular JP4/5 for the mission. Then the crew had to burn that load down to nearly empty in order to land safely as the tanks would start leaking as the airframe cooled on landing. Maintenance was extremely costly and most of the usual ground support equipment was useless on the Blackbird. Heck, up until it’s last 10 years or so of service the only way that you could start the engines was with a special cart with a pair of turbocharged Buick V-8 engines that spun a special flexible cable. If the coupling came apart, it could kill people.
The F-22 Raptor is not a replacement for the SR-71. It will eventually replace the F-15.
Keeping the Blackbird flying would be akin to keeping a 50 year old car on the road while a modern replacement goes 3 times as far on a gallon of gas, pollutes far less, is much safer in an accident, handles better, is more comfortable, and needs tuneups every 100,000 miles vs every 10,000 miles.

The SR-71 was a 34 year old airplane when it was retired. Built largely of titanium, it can only last so long. Titanium does not have a long life, like many metals. It becomes very brittle over years of hot/cold treatment, and expansion and shrinkage. Something it did on the SR-71 every flight. Did you know that the SR had purposely loose fitting skin panels to take heat expansion into account? A fully fueled SR-71 sitting on the ground leaked fuel like crazy. When it got up to speed, and the airframe heated up, the panels expanded, creating the proper seals.
For all we know, there is a replacement for the SR-71 being played with by the USAF. But right now satellites and drones like Global Hawk take care of things.
