    Wow Cat797 is one awesome king. But really depends how powerfull your locomotive is. need to consider locos have an easy job pulling loads along a relatively flat rail road with metal rails that have much less resistance. The 797 however has to be able to climb up inclines and move on its huge gignormous wheels which have immense surface area in contact with a muddy sticky floor. So I would say the Caterpillar 797 should be much more powerful right on!

    your buddy isnt far off in what he said. while the 797 is no slouch, there are many more locomotives with a prime mover (motor) that produce more than 4000hp, easily. what makes your buddy right to a point is the fact that there are locomotives out there that come with less horsepower. generally a switcher type locomotive (1000hp avg.) or one that isnt used for mainline freight hauling. the power isnt needed. it is safe to say todays average mainline loco is 4400hp and weighs in around 200 plus tons.

    but know this, and for your buddy too, while Catepiller has made prime movers for locomotives, even those pale in comparison to what EMD and GE can and do produce. even steam and turbine powered locomotives have existed with way more horsies than the 797.

    as for weight. well…. 300 tons isnt nothing to sneeze at. once again though, there are many locomotives that out weigh that even. a few over the 500 ton mark. and yes those were high horsepower locos. upwards of 7500 to 10,000hp.

    so if you and your buddy bet on this, id have to say its a null bet since that depending on the loco you choose to compare to the 797, it could go either way. if you want to win, choose an Allegheny or Big Boy for the locos. they are easily almost two 797′s in weight and output.

    as far as which has more whoop a**? you could switch the loco and the 797′s motors into the other and they would work. both motors are comparable… ie: both are high output diesels of 4000hp or better. its the transmission that decides the whoop a** factor. as in, what do you do with the 4000hp? make electricity or pump fluid? heres the apple/oranges part. so just stick to comparing the motors alone.

    this is why i say you cant compare a 797 to a switcher! a 1000 hp motor prolly wouldnt even begin to get a 797 rolling. but that 4000 hp cat motor would make that switcher fly! thusly the 797 couldnt load up on a locomotive thats capable of handling 6000hp. youd be a few horsies short and definately doubling the hill. the 6000hp loco motor would make the 797 do wheelies (loaded!).

    so you see, while the 797 is comparable, and a fine piece of machinary…. the locomotives gotcha over all in the end. they do pretty much the same type of job, just theres more bigger ones than your buddy has heard of.
