Around here, I have to plan a pass about 2 miles before I get to a passing zone. When passing you have to have the inertia already in place to complete the pass before starting the pass. Also you have to have the time to abort the pass and fall in behind if the pass can not be completed.
I ramble, I am sick and tired of drivers that just do not have a clue. Passing too late in a passing zone, or where there is none. Now I drive crazy some times, and the biggest trigger for me is the clown that screwed up last time they passed me. I will brake to help them pass me. But if they ever passed me in a no passing zone before, they will never get the chance too again. I don’t mind them killing themselves, but they are putting others (head on traffic) at risk. I had a friend killed when someone was passing in a no passing zone. His wife and two small children died with him. It was a closed casket funeral for them all.

When I first started driving, I almost ran over/ran off the road somebody that was riding along in the blind spot behind my tractor to my right. That taught me to signal for a little longer and check my mirrors thoroughly.

1. They don’t realize how unsafe it is to be in a trucker’s blind spot. They could be wiped out in seconds if the trucker doesn’t see them and makes a lane change or has to swerve in another lane to avoid an accident. Even though the trucker would be at fault for making an unsafe lane change, would that really matter if you’re dead?
2. They don’t want to speed or take a chance at speeding up and getting a ticket. If they are worried about that, they shouldn’t have passed at that time.
3. They see a cop ahead and keep to the speed limit on the side of the semi. It won’t hurt to go 5 over to pass the truck if needed, I’ve done it before when passing and a cop never came after me for going 5 over. Also, it’s worth noting that cops can also stop drivers for staying in the left lane too long or while not passing or not passing quick enough. Several states have keep right except to pass laws (or similar wording) and the left lane is for passing.
4. They are on cruise control and don’t want to use their gas pedal to speed up. That’s what the gas pedal is for. I sometimes use cruise control and if I’m passing and can’t pass with the speed my cruise control is set at, I speed up briefly to pass.

But what I have seen more than that is that they (after passing) pull back into the same lane right in front of the truck WAY TOO SOON, giving the truck driver NO safety distance to stop if he has to.
