By all means get a set with both Metric and SAE tools. But as far as the two you’re choosing from my answer is neither one. Why would anyone spend $ 3,000 on a tool set that could be purchased for less than $ 1,000, especially a young man starting out who might have to get a loan to buy them. I’m not criticizing the quality pf SnapOn, they are absolutely the best tools money can buy but an almost identical set can be purchased in another brand for well under $ 1,000. Either brand will get you the same job. I’m using a 50 year old set of Craftsman tools I inherited from my father. They perform as well as the SnapOns that have used. When I occasionally break a tool using a cheater bar Sears still honors their lifetime guarantee. And I’ll add that the newer pieces I have added to replace the ones that got lost are just as good as the old ones.

It depends on what you will work on, if the cars are made in Japan or Europe the SAE tools won’t get much use. If it is place that works on anything then get the full set of SAE and Metric.

If you are just starting out in the trade I wouldn’t buy Snap-on; they are to expensive for an apprentice, buy a cheaper brand to start off with.

Put a grind mark on all your tools that you can prove it is yours, a lot of tools go missing in workshops; not really missing but into another guys toolbox when he finishes using it.

It would make sense to go with the metric set. It has shallow and deep sockets. Then all you would need to get would be an SAE deep and shallow set. Like everyone has said, Snap On is expensive, and there are some other good tools out there, but if they are free, that’s even better. When you do start working, just remember that just because the tool trucks sell whole sets, doesn’t mean you need a whole set.
