The only way for the steering and the breaks to go completly out at the same time was if someone had knowledge of cars and intentionally made it do that, or it would be a 1 in a million chance. I have never heard of it happening at the same time or seen it. If power steering went out you still have steering just no assist. If your master cylinder went out usually you will still have front or rear or even such as front right-left rear or left front-right rear breaks as a safety percaution. But if the breaks went out the e-brake is a completly different system which allows the back breaks to be applied by using a wire. The only thing you can do is have a master certified state and ASE approved mechanic take a look at the car and see if there was anything wrong with any of the sytems in the car to see what was the problem with it or if your son made a mistake from inexpirence or not. Having a ASE and State certification and being a Master mechanic would hold up in court better since the person would be expeiernced working on cars. But I am very very sorry to hear of your loss.
