Is it against OSHA regulation to unplug annoying Forklift reverse siren?

I am a forklift operator. Some sit down electric counterbalance forklift trucks have reverse sirens, and some of the same model/year do not have them. My company is preaching that it is against OSHA regulation to unplug/modify the sirens. But, if its such a big deal, why do some have the sirens and some do not?
None of the standup Raymond forklifts have them, and some of the sit downs do not.
Its as if you can add the safety feature if you want, but is it required for all lift trucks?

And if I did add a reverse siren to a forklift, why would OSHA have the authority to tell me I can’t modify it?

Some of the sirens are right behind your head, and at a high decibel level. Sure, you could wear earplugs, but they are not required where I work. And, I feel Its better to have full hearing capacity, to hear if a forklift is approaching, down an isle. Horns are sounded regularly, but there is always a chance someone may not sound them…not a chance you want to take…

Ways they can be modified: You can put a peice of paper over the siren to muffle them, or you can unplug them. However, as I have said, we are told its against regulation….

If the had sirens and were unplugged OSHA would have a shiit fit. You don’t want to mess with OSHA, they will give you a hefty fine in a heart beat.As far as the ones without sirens it’s funny they don’t make your company install them on the forklifts.

OSHA never has made a commitment to enforce the installation of alarms on forklifts, but if the vehicle was manufactured with an alarm, rearview mirror, or other safety device, the employer may be cited for a failure to maintain safety equipment.

From what I can gather on the OSHA site it states that if the forklifts are equipped with sirens/back up alarms then it is illegal to modify them or unplug them. If they are not equipped with them then it isn’t an issue. Yeah, odd I know, but there you have it.
I worked in factories for a lot of years. As a personal aside, and speaking as someone with moderate ear damage (tinnitus) from the experience, I suggest you find some sort of ear plugs to wear while working. The companies I worked for did not make it mandatory to wear them, although they did strongly urge people to do so, as there were pluses and minuses to the practice. But, you will be thankful you did later in life when you have optimal hearing capacity for your age.

Then that is really all that matters. No, you can’t modify or unplug them.

It doesn’t matter that some do not have them from the factory. You are not required to have marker lights on a slide in camper for your pick up truck, but if it has them, or YOU add them, then if they don’t work you can get an equipment failure fix it ticket.

The difference may be that the forklifts are different year models, which may have had different regulations at the time of their manufacture.

But, I am pretty sure that IF it has been manufactured with a back-up beeper, it must be operational. However, you might be able to re-locate the siren to a location other than right behind your head.
