No, this isn’t the usual “Is a 250 a good starter bike cause its slow” question.

I had someone explain to me that for ANY moto rider, riding a less powerful 250 is the *only* way to learn proper riding techniques, such as superior cornering and technical abilities. Apparently these machines’ lack of torque and whatnot are very forgiving when you accidentally give too much throttle in a turn, and their light weight teaches you to follow “lines” better.

This is opposed to getting a heavier, faster 600CC bike, which is what I’m considering. I can understand the lack of torque making the 250 more forgiving if you make a mistake while turning…but is the bike that much heavier? Will my riding technique ultimately really suffer that much if I don’t start of on a super small 250?
A train, thanks for the response. I already took MSF. I am 6 2 so yes, I feel I will be too tall for the little ninja. Also I weigh about 190 so I know this thing is gonna bog down on the hills for me.

The thing is though, if I really want to master carrying speed into turns, as the first reply said…wouldnt the little ninja be a good way of teaching me? I cant help but think the extra power of a 600CC will “spoil” me a bit.

But on the other hand, maybe I should jsut get the 600 and really *really* devote myself to reading up and studying riding theory (motorcycle books/etc)

Here’s what i’ve heard:

It’s not so much that you can’t learn on a 600, you can, no matter your weight.

BUT you WILL drop your bike at some point. It’s either getting an old 1.5k ninja 250r to drop, or a brand new CBR 600rr for 9k.. you choose. It’s temping, I know, just to hit the 600cc class, but please do it for your own safety (and the beauty of your bike..)

My first bike was a 650lb 1100 cruiser. I took the 2 day state Motorcycle safety class first, and moving from a 125cc that we used in class to my new bike wasn’t much of a difference. At first you should stick to side streets as you become used to the new bike.

The weight of the bike is felt at very slow speeds, when you are taking normal turns at 20mph, you don’t feel the weight of the bike. The most important thing to learn is your bike’s “Friction Zone” or the point where the clutch just begins to engage. Once you master this, you can weave in and out of cones doing 3mph on a 800lb Goldwing.

Motorcycle Police officers are the best example of this, they take advanced riding courses and can swing that 800lb bike around like it’s a toy.

My point to all this is that you will outgrow a 250cc bike within a week and then have to get a bigger bike. Plus if you are a big buy like me, you’ll probably look like a fool on a 250 anyhow. Get what bike you want, take a motorcycle safety course, take your time and always be alert.

I’m 6’03 195lb, you can read all you want….there is no real substitute for experience. Get a used 600cc and take it slow till you build confidence. The people who get messed up on bikes are the ones who don’t obey posted speed limits, weave in and out of traffic, etc.

250cc are the choice of MSF because they are easiest to learn on. Easiest
