ive just been lent a dumper for my field and the guy hasn’t told me how to start it. im 23 so its before my time lol. im not sure what make it is but i think the engine is a petters or lister. i havent looked properly yet i am going to attempt to start it tomorrow but im actually scared of it. ive been told these things can break your wrist if they kick back. im not a novice to machinery ive drove 20ton excavators and various other stuff its just these old girls im not used to lol.

so anyone know the best way to fire her up without ending up in A&E?

its been stood for 5 years with diesel in it so it should fire?

Lawl! You’re in for some fun!

I’ve used small Lister-petter engines in the past and yeah, they’re good AS LONG as you know how to start them!

No.1- If it’s been sat for 5 years with diesel in it, it’ll be a problem. Any water in the tank will be in the bottom and get sucked down into the injectors when you crank the handle. So you need to disconnect a fuel line and drain a little out (or the whole lot and start fresh).

No.2- Warm the air inlet (should be like a pipe/funnel looking design). This will aid the combustion. Use a small blow torch or hair dryer (if you’re near to power).

No3.- This is the magic part. Depending on the engine you should have either one or two decompression levers (or maybe even only one lever) on the top of the engine. They’re maybe a couple of inches and should move back and forth quite easy. Put them one way. Try and turn the crank. If it doesn’t turn over, then have them in the other position. Now the crank should turn over really easy. This is the ‘break your arm’ section, but please, remain calm!
Spin the crank really fast, keeping one hand on one of the decompression levers. If they’re linked, even better. Keep spinning, then ease (EASE) the decompression levers over to the other position. Do it ’til you can feel the crank through them then push it just a little more. This should be enough to start the engine. Then pass the other over after it too, gentle and easy. If you just thrown them over like in the movies, the shock will send the crank handle back into your hand! Be firm, but gentle. If it doesn’t go to start off with, don’t be surprised. Fresh diesel and warming the air inlet are always good starting points.

Fails to start? Could be an air lock. Look along the fuel pipes til you see large (ish) bolts connecting the pipes into the engine. The fuel passes through these. Back them off til you can see a hole through the threads. These are for letting air out of the system. Now (with the decompression levers in the ‘off’ position) crank the handle til you see fuel coming out of the ‘Banjos’. After you do, tighten up and go back to step 1.
