A few days ago, on Saturday night, I was taking the bus home from work. I was sure I had enough money for bus fare, and it turned out I didn’t. I had a credit card though, and I fully intended on paying, so I went up and asked the bus driver if I could just pay the fare when we got to the bus station. I didn’t have to go as far as the bus station, but I wanted to pay for the ride so I was willing to go there and walk back an extra 15 minutes to get where I needed to go. The bus driver let out a heavy sigh, rolled his eyes, and said very loudly so everyone on the bus could hear “MA’AM, WE GO THROUGH THIS EVERY WEEK. YOU CAN’T RIDE THE BUS FOR FREE, I NEED THE FARE NOW.” First of all, screw him for calling me ma’am, I’m only in my 20s. Second, I’ve ridden the bus with him 3 times tops, and every time except for this one I paid the fare, so the “we go through this every week” part was BS. Third, I wasn’t friggin’ trying to ride the bus for free! I had made an honest mistake, not having enough money and I wanted to pay the only way I could, with a credit card at a machine at the bus station, since the little machine on the bus doesn’t take credit cards!
So then I searched some more, in vain, and couldn’t find anything. Then I asked the bus driver again if I could just pay at the bus station, and he again YELLED at me “YOU CAN’T RIDE THE BUS FOR FREE.” He was talking to me like I was some retarded child, loud enough for everyone to hear!
Then he said, “I guess you’re out of luck,” and he opened the doors for me to get off. I will add that it was -10 degrees outside and snowing hard. And that it was 11 pm, in a not-so-safe part of town and I’m a female who was by herself. He repeated very loudly, “YOU CAN’T RIDE THE BUS FOR FREE.” I was very irritated by this time – not only was he making me walk home in a snowstorm, he was continuing to humiliate me and insult my intelligence in front of a bunch of people, so I yelled back “I KNOW!” and got off the bus. I had to walk for an hour in the blizzard to get home. Now, I have a bad cold.
Not only did he show ZERO compassion and make me get off the bus in the middle of nowhere at 11 pm in a snowstorm, he humiliated me by talking to me loudly like this in front of everyone else on the bus. I know I should have had the bus fare, but it was an honest mistake!
I feel like he was on a power trip, wielding a tiny little bit of power over someone when he got the chance to. I understand that he technically wasn’t doing anything against the rules or wrong, but I feel he should have shown some basic human compassion, especially since it was dark outside, snowing hard, and unsafe for me, AND that this had never happened before with me and I made it clear I was willing to pay when I could. Does anyone agree that he was a jerk?
