If you have a volt meter, put the leads on their respective terminals when your truck is turned off. Start it up and do it again without turning any of those accessories on, if the voltage is higher then your alternator is most likely doing it’s job.

You may be putting too much of a load on it considering you have a boom arm.

A volt meter is the best, at home test. The battery voltage should be about 12 vdc with the engine off and no electrics operating (lights, radio, boom arm, etc). With the engine running, if the voltage drops while the electrics are being used, then I would suspect the alternator. However, I would also expect that you would eventually have trouble starting the engine by your description.

If you can get your truck to AZ or the like, they can test the system. However, I’ve had some trouble with them not diagnosing problems correctly. My battery was discharged because I left my headlights on. Took the battery to AZ and they said it was bad. I didn’t tell them what I did. I just told them that I’m not sure of their diagnosis. Bought a $ 20 battery charger, recharged my battery and used it for about another 2 years.

first of all if you unhook the battery , you are also cutting the charge wire voltage from the battery to the stator in the alternator, and in doing this there is no way the alt will charge, having said that ,to properly diagnose the charging system you will need to charge the battery up full with a charger, then load test the battery to determine it’s state , if it passes a resistance test and it reads 12 – 13 volts on a multimeter , then move to the alternator . With the engine off and the key in the run position, check for battery voltage at the connector on the alt, if there is 12 volts start the engine and connect the multimeter probes to the positive and negative terminals of the battery and you should get a reading of at least 14 volts , if it is anything less , the alt needs replacing, also if the acid in the battery is low , this also will affect charging , add water if it needs it . Oh by the way if there is no battery voltage at the alt, trace the wire back to the battery, look for breaks or bad connections ,ete,ete, run a new wire if you have to …….good luck………oh i forgot, if you have less than 12 volts in the battery ,that means it is no good and it needs to be replaced…………..
