Changing the coolant in my radiator?

I have to change the water and conditioner on two deisel generator set engines. I have been told to use distilled water and a coolant conditioner as ordinary tap water has to many minerals and chemicals in it. Also been told the coolant conditioner would inhibit any minerals and chemicals in the tap water and would cause no harm at all. So any suggestions would be appreciated. Cost is not the issue just want the best practice.

depending on how cold it gets where you use the generator you might need a solution of antifreeze. But you want to use distilled water. Tap water can be very hard, meaning that is has salts of calcium in it and will lead to build ups ( just like the buildup in your shower if you have hard water) and if the buildup is bad enough it can restrict flow throughout the heat exchanger. This usually takes awhile. This diminished effiency can lead to engine damage. Conditioner cannot get rid of it. Since cost is not an issue I would use distilled water and antifreeze if you need it to keep the radiator working at max efficiency and to promote long life.
