It unfortunately sounds like a no-go idea. Unimproved roads don’t have high traffic volume, which is needed to offset the cost of gathering tolls. We’re already paying taxes to our states and municipalities for just these reasons you’ve listed. It sounds like your local officials aren’t doing their part.
Toll roads do generate revenue, but there has to be a lot of traffic to justify putting in booths and manning them with attendants. I don’t think I’d be willing to pay to travel an unimproved road, but that’s just me.
I actually just read an article that detailed how states are selling toll roads to private interests. This is disturbing on so many levels. I just hope that the roads are maintained properly and that profit taking isn’t the primary motive for the purchase. Some of these roads are highly traveled commuter routes into our largest cities, like Chicago.
