You are talking about 50-1000 trucks.

What about people who live near the old rail lines? Do you think they are going to accept a lot of truck traffic? Will they allow fueling and parking areas for the trucks?

Trucks and trains will always have their niche to fill, and which the other is more efficient at (i.e., trucks carrying goods over short distances and small amounts of them and trains carrying large amounts of goods [thus the reason railroads are engineered with long sweeping curves and soft grades], usually bulk, over long distances). However, in actuality, we would be wise in this country to turn several unused railroad right-of-ways back into their original purpose because not only do railroads currently need the excess capacity but also it would be much easier on the environment with the efficiencies gained (among other things). Railroads are not outdated, as many people believe, and still serve a true purpose in this country.
