I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse (front wheel drive) and I need two new tires. Last time I was at a tire shop they told me the new spec is to install new tires on the back of a car instead of in the front. He said there was a big lawsuit and it was decided you should have better traction on the rear tires (regardless of front or rear wheel drive) because if the rear tires lose traction you can’t steer them to get traction again. His logic was if you lose traction at the rear then you can turn your front wheels into the skid to keep from spinning out.
I live in Florida so I don’t have to worry about winter traction from snowy stop signs but we do get heavy rainfall. I think it makes more sense to have the new tires on the front.
Here’s my logic:
1. Front tires do 100% of the steering and 70% of the stopping. Makes sense to have the good traction on the tires responsible for steering and stopping.
2. On a front wheel drive car the most likely steering condition with poor traction would be understeer, not oversteer. Again, makes sense to have better traction up front here too.
3. Front tires would encounter standing water first, as they hit the water they’d push at least some of it out of the way for the rear tires, I think this makes hydroplaning a lot more likely on the front tires.
4. Older tires are more prone to a blowout. If I have to have a blow out I’d much rather have it on a rear tire than a front tire.
Have I got this wrong?
I also tried to figure out one more thing, what’s the shop’s motive for putting the new tires on the rear?
I could only come up with one answer. Front tires generally wear more quickly, especially on a front wheel drive car. If you put the old tires where the tires will wear more quickly, they’ll need to be replaced sooner. (In fact by putting my tires that are currently “the good pair” on the back I plan on getting at least another year or maybe two out of them they’re currently at 7/32.) Are the shops thinking they’re driving more business by getting the old tires to wear out sooner?

However, I cannot understand your question. You state ‘I need two new tires’. If you know you need tires why don’t you know where they are needed?
As usual, everyone got this wrong. Time for the professionals to step in.
Your logic is faulty, the tire store is correct. It is the official, stated policy of every tire manufacturer and all of the tire trade associations such as the RMA and TIA to mount the new tires on the rear axle when only 2 are being replaced. Better traction on the rear INCREASES SAFETY!
The reason is a loss of traction at the rear axle is likely to result in sudden and uncontrollable oversteer. The rear axle is critical for vehicle stability – they don’t just hold up the trunk. And trust me – if your going to have a blow out it is much better to have it on the front.

Put them on the rear – if you have a blow out on the front, you merely steer the vehicle over to the shoulder. If you have a blowout on the rear, the odds of a roll over are greatly increased, especially if the driver tries to overcompensate.

New tyres ALWAYS GO ON THE REAR. When you brake hard, the rear of the car lifts up, so it needs a tyre with greater traction on the rear. ALL tyre manufacturers will tell you this.

You seem to have a better grasp of the situation than the guy that was giving you advice. I would contradict you in one aspect, properly aligned vehicles with tire pressure monitored correctly should wear at almost the same rate, that is unless you corner like a crazed driver. Rotating the tires about every 5,000 miles is a good way to monitor the wear and evaluate the alignment more closely. Best tires up front is the better choice, a blow out in the steering is very difficult to control.
FOOTNOTE: 7,000 miles later the tires were rotated front to back while checking the brakes. It’s not safe if you don’t have good brakes.
