How to Operate a Backhoe
When you stop and think about all the different moving parts in a backhoe loader, it seems unbelievable that you need only one person at the controls. As we saw in the last two sections, the backhoe arm swivels on four different hinges (some bucket designs have five) and the loader moves on two to three hinges. Additionally, the operator controls the stabilizer arms and moves the tractor around while loading. How does one person do all of this?
Anyone who ever played with Tonka trucks in the dirt as a child secretly digs the idea of someday using a backhoe as an adult. With a little attention to safety, it’s entirely possible. Whether you need a hole dug that is just too big to tackle with a shovel or other means, or you have a job that requires you to operate a backhoe, if you’re planning on using one of these machines, you need to know some basic information before jumping on one and taking off. This article will show you how.
#1 – Running a backhoe requires some advance research on the area where you plan to dig. You will need to locate and mark underground cables, gas, water, and sewer before digging. Also, be sure to assess the area for holes, obstacles or drop-offs.
# 2 – Read the operator’s manual.
# 3 – Use handrails, ladders, or attached steps when mounting the machine.
# 4 – Fasten your seat belt, set the brake, and place the transmission in neutral before starting the engine.
# 5 – Start the machine.
# 6 – Keep the loader bucket down on the ground while you level the machine.
# 7 – Begin to dig. Always operate the backhoe from the seat.
# 8 – Fill the bucket in accordance with manufactuer’s instructions.
# 9 – Lift loads with the weight over the back of the machine, not the side.
# 10 – Dump the bucket uphill when working on a slope.
# 11 – Park on flat ground with the loader and backhoe buckets on the ground when finished.
# 12 – Relieve hydraulic pressure by working the controls before turning the backhoe off.
Experienced backhoe operators use the backhoe loader in much the same way you would use a shovel or wheelbarrow at home — they know exactly how to move the controls to dig and load quickly and effectively. And they’re always thinking ahead to their next few moves, planning their strategy. This is also something like driving a car: When you see a traffic jam ahead of you on the road, you’re already deciding how you’re going to navigate it. Just as with driving, learning how to operate the backhoe is only the first step — the real skill is in knowing how to use the backhoe to accomplish different tasks.
Tips:
- Try to find an experienced operator to help you get the hang of backhoe operation. These can be incredibly dangerous machines for inexperienced persons to operate.
- Practice digging and backfilling a small hole in a safe location, and practice operating the machine in an area where there are no overhead obstructions.
- Have your cell phone with you at all times, in case you get into a spot of trouble.
Warnings
- Call the local utility locating service before digging any holes unless you are on private property with no easements for underground utilities. If in doubt, call.
- Do not allow anyone near the machine while you’re operating it.
- Wear the seat belt any time the machine is running.
